Coimbra is famous for its landmarks such as the University of Coimbra created in 1290, on a hill overlooking the city that has evolved throughout the old town. Listed in 2013, UNESCO found that Coimbra University is an outstanding example of an integrated university city that keeps cultural and ceremonial traditions alive through the centuries. Overlooking the Mondego River, NH Coimbra Dona Ines offers the opportunity to discover the Portuguese lifestyle, culture and gastronomy. Within a 10-minute walk, you will find yourself at “Rua da Sofia”, the heart of the city center, near to, some of the most famous landmarks of Coimbra: Se Velha (Old Cathedral), Santa Cruz Church, where rests D. Afonso Henriques, Portugal first king, Machado de Castro National Museum and Portugal dos Pequenitos, a family favorite. NH Coimbra Dona Ines is inspired by the story of Pedro and Ines, which takes a central place in the Portuguese culture. It takes place in 1300 between Lisbon and Coimbra, Pedro was a prince heir to the throne, son of Alfonso IV, king of Portugal. From the very beginning, the king planned his son’s wedding. But Pedro’s attention fell on Ines de Castro, lady-in-waiting to Princess Constanza, for whom he fell madly in love. The two went against everybody, especially the king, and they decided to get secretly married. Their love, full of obstacles, marked the events of the kingdom of Portugal. To this day their tombs are one of the most visited cultural attractions by tourists.
